Free English spelling games
Short answer: English for Fun has two free spelling games: Spell It! and English Word Builder. Both use short three- and four-letter words with a picture and a spoken word, so you can practice spelling without reading English first. They are free, need no account and work offline after the first visit.
The spelling games
Spell It!
Look at the picture, listen, and tap the letters in order. Each letter name is spoken. 30 words, with faint letters as a guide at first.
English Word Builder
Letters fall down the board: move each one into place to build the word before the board fills up. 32 words, in Starter and Fast modes, with hints you can turn off.
A good order to play
- Learn the letter names first, with Letter Trace or Letter Island.
- Start with Spell It!: it shows the picture and says the word.
- When three-letter words feel easy, try Word Builder in Starter mode, then Fast mode.
- After each game, write one of the words on paper.
Why short words first
Three-letter words with regular sounds, such as cat, dog and sun, let you connect each letter to a sound. Four-letter words add a little more.
Every word in these games is an everyday word with a picture, so spelling stays tied to meaning. The words are listed on each game page.
