Free English games and printables for the classroom
Teachers of English to young children can use English for Fun's games, practice tools and printables in class for free. The games run in a web browser with nothing to install, no accounts, no ads and no data collected about children.
Games to show on the classroom screen
- Find It!: the game says an object, the class finds and points. A good five-minute warm-up.
- Memory Match: find the matching pairs; split the class into two teams taking turns.
- Audio Memory: listen and remember the order of words. Needs an internet connection.
- Read It!: read short words grouped by sound (a, i, o, u, sh). For children getting ready to read.
- Simon Says: the class listens, does the action, then one child taps the picture. Tricky mode for 6–7 year olds.
- Letter Trace: trace letters on a touch screen; model the stroke order first.
- Spelling games Spell It!, Word Bubble Shooter and English Word Builder for children who know their letters.
- The first island of each of the seven island games (words, sentences, letters, numbers, maths, shapes, colors) is also free: see all games.
Using the games in class
- Open a game on a computer connected to a projector or TV, press F11 (Windows) for full screen, and turn the speakers up.
- The games work with a mouse or touch. We have tested them on phones, tablets and computers, but not on every interactive whiteboard, so try a game before the lesson.
- The microphone is optional. In a noisy room, switch it off in the game and have the class say the words aloud together.
- Progress is saved only on the device in use. There are no student accounts.
Practice tools for older classes
- The Sound Pairs game (score, streak, shareable result), Minimal pairs, Ending sounds, Sentence Builder, Plurals, -s and -ed endings: 10-question rounds with the rule shown after each answer.
- Fun activities: tongue twisters, "What am I?" riddles, knock-knock jokes, all with audio.
- Screen-free: 10 English games that also work with a whole class.
