Magic e: how a silent e changes the vowel
Short answer: A silent e at the end of a short word makes the vowel before it say its name. Cap becomes cape /keɪp/, kit becomes kite /kaɪt/, and hop becomes hope /hoʊp/. The e itself is not pronounced. This VCe pattern (vowel, consonant, silent e) is one of the most useful spelling patterns in English.

At a glance
| Without e | With silent e | Vowel change |
|---|---|---|
| cap /kæp/ | cape /keɪp/ | /æ/ → /eɪ/ |
| kit /kɪt/ | kite /kaɪt/ | /ɪ/ → /aɪ/ |
| hop /hɑp/ | hope /hoʊp/ | /ɑ/ → /oʊ/ |
| cub /kʌb/ | cube /kyub/ | /ʌ/ → /yu/ |
How to make the sound
- Look at the end of the word. Is there a vowel, one consonant and a silent e?
- If yes, say the vowel by its name (a = /eɪ/, i = /aɪ/, o = /oʊ/, u = /yu/).
- Do not pronounce the e.
- Compare the pair: cap – cape, kit – kite.
Short and long pairs
| Short | Long (magic e) |
|---|---|
| cap | cape |
| kit | kite |
| hop | hope |
| not | note |
Examples in sentences
- cake
a says /eɪ/: /keɪk/. - kite
i says /aɪ/: /kaɪt/. - home
o says /oʊ/: /hoʊm/. - bike
i says /aɪ/: /baɪk/. - plane
a says /eɪ/: /pleɪn/. - note
o says /oʊ/: /noʊt/.
Common problems
- Reading the final e: Do not say “cake-uh”. The e is silent.
- Using the short vowel: cake is not /kæk/. Use the long vowel.
- Applying the rule to every word: Some words are exceptions: have, give, come.
For Vietnamese speakers
- The long vowels /eɪ/, /aɪ/ and /oʊ/ glide. Move your mouth during the sound; do not hold one position.
- Practice pairs such as hop and hope to feel the change.
