Saying it with feeling: how intonation shows emotion
Short answer: The same words can mean different things depending on how your voice moves. Rising pitch can show a question or surprise (Really?), falling pitch shows a finished statement or certainty (Okay.), and a wider range shows excitement (Thank you!). Intonation tells the listener how you feel, so practice it with short phrases.

How to make the sound
- Choose the feeling: surprise, agreement, thanks or doubt.
- Raise your pitch for a question or surprise, and let it fall for a finished statement.
- Widen the pitch for excitement and narrow it for calm.
- Practice with a short phrase until the feeling is clear.
Examples in sentences
- Really?
Rising: surprise or interest. - Okay.
Falling: agreement. - Thank you!
Wide pitch, falls at the end: warm. - Sorry?
Rising: asking to repeat. - Sorry.
Falling: apology. - Oh no!
Falling and wide: worry.
Common problems
- Speaking with one flat pitch: Flat speech can sound bored. Vary the pitch.
- Rising at the end of every sentence: A rise sounds like a question. Use a fall for statements.
- Too wide a range: An extremely wide range can sound unnatural. Use it for strong feeling.
For Vietnamese speakers
- Vietnamese uses pitch for tones in each word. In English, pitch works across the whole sentence, not inside one word.
- Do not change the tone of one word to change its meaning. Change the sentence melody.
