How to write a descriptive essay
Short answer: A descriptive essay paints a picture of one person, place or thing. Open with an introduction that names the subject and gives a main impression, use two or three body paragraphs that each cover one aspect with sense details, and close with a conclusion that returns to the impression.

A model text
My grandmother’s kitchen is the warmest room I know.
The smells come first: ginger, fresh rice and tea. Even from the door, they tell me I am welcome.
Then the sounds: a pot bubbling, a spoon tapping, and my grandmother humming an old song.
Finally, the light. Yellow morning sun falls across the table and turns the steam into gold.
That kitchen still feels like home, wherever I am.
- The introduction states the impression.
- Each body paragraph covers one aspect.
- The conclusion returns to the impression.
