Final consonants: how to say the last sound of a word

Short answer: Final consonants carry grammar and meaning in English: plural -s, past -ed, and the difference between words such as cat and cap. Say each final consonant, but keep it short and with no extra vowel. Try cat, dog, book, hand, milk and desk, and check that you can hear the last sound.
