Syllable division: how to split words into syllables

Short answer: Splitting a word into syllables helps you read and say it. A common rule is that two consonants between vowels are split in the middle (rab-bit, pen-cil, bas-ket). A single consonant between vowels often goes with the second vowel (ti-ger). Check by saying the word slowly and clapping.
