Blend and break words: how to join and split sounds
Short answer: Blending joins sounds or parts into a word; breaking splits a word into its parts. Rain and bow blend into rainbow, and rainbow breaks into rain and bow. Then you can go smaller: cat breaks into /k/ /æ/ /t/. Practice both directions so that reading and spelling feel natural.

How to make the sound
- Say the word slowly.
- Break it into big parts (rain + bow).
- For short words, break it into single sounds (/k/ /æ/ /t/).
- Blend the parts back together smoothly.
Examples in sentences
- rainbow
rain + bow: two parts. - football
foot + ball: two parts. - bedroom
bed + room: two parts. - toothbrush
tooth + brush: two parts. - cat
/k/ /æ/ /t/: three sounds. - sun
/s/ /ʌ/ /n/: three sounds.
Common problems
- Breaking too fast: Say each part with a small pause, then blend smoothly.
- Adding vowels: Saying “kuh-a-tuh” for cat. Keep consonants short.
- Blending without a smooth flow: Join parts with no gap: /kæt/, not /k/…/æ/…/t/.
For Vietnamese speakers
- Compound words such as bedroom keep both parts clear. Stress usually falls on the first part: BED-room.
- Final consonants must stay when you blend. Do not drop /t/ in cat.
