Same or different sounds: how to hear small differences
Short answer: Two English words can differ by only one sound: cat and hat, bed and red. To hear this, listen to the whole word twice, then compare the first, middle and last sounds one by one. Pairs that sound the same are identical; pairs that change one sound are different words with different meanings.

At a glance
| Pair | Same or different? | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| pig – pig | same | nothing |
| cat – hat | different | first sound /k/ → /h/ |
| bed – red | different | first sound /b/ → /r/ |
| sun – sun | same | nothing |
How to make the sound
- Listen to the first word and keep it in your head.
- Listen to the second word.
- Compare the first sound, the middle sound and the last sound.
- If all three match, the words are the same. If one changes, they are different.
Examples in sentences
- cat – hat
Different: /kæt/ and /hæt/ start with different sounds. - pig – pig
Same: /pɪg/ twice. - bed – red
Different: /bɛd/ and /rɛd/. - sun – sun
Same: /sʌn/ twice. - bus – bug
Different: only the last sound changes, /s/ and /g/. - ship – sheep
Different: the middle vowel changes, /ɪ/ and /i/.
Common problems
- Listening for meaning only: Two words can mean different things but sound close. Listen to the sounds, not the meaning.
- Missing the last sound: Many learners compare only the first sound. Check the end of the word too.
- Missing vowel differences: Short and long vowels (ship, sheep) can sound the same at first. Listen for the length.
For Vietnamese speakers
- Vietnamese uses tones to tell words apart. In English, the sounds themselves carry the difference, and pitch does not change the word.
- Final consonants such as /t/, /d/ and /g/ are easy to miss, so listen to the end of every word.

Questions
Why practice hearing before speaking?
You can say only the sounds you can hear. Good listening makes speaking clearer.
How many pairs should I practice?
Ten pairs a day is enough. Mix same and different pairs.
Does pitch change the word?
No. In English, pitch shows feeling or a question, not the word itself.
