Syllables and rhythm: how to count the beats in a word

Short answer: A syllable is one beat of a word, and each syllable has one vowel sound. Dog has one beat, rab-bit has two, ba-na-na has three and el-e-phant has three. To count, clap or tap once for each beat as you say the word slowly. English rhythm depends on these beats, with some stronger than others.
